Baby Garrett indeed had Torticollis but it was not Idiopathic. It was Forceps induced Torticollis.
His head was leaning to the left and he could not turn his head to either side. The parents described that right after the delivery there was also a nerve injury to the side of their baby’s face from the forceps. That problem eventually cleared up on its own.
Furthermore, he had no Grasping Reflexes. There are several other infant reflexes present at birth. The grasping reflex is also known as Tonic Grasp Reflex or Palmar Grasp Reflex. By placing a finger in a newborns hand the baby will grasp your finger tightly.
Baby Garrett also did not sleep well. He was fussy and cried a lot during his waking hours. Every time his parents took him to see the pediatrician, which was every two weeks, they were told there was nothing that could be done for their newborn and that he would outgrow it. This was difficult for them to accept but they were assured that this pediatrician was one of the best in El Paso.
These parents could not stand to see their newborn baby suffer like this any longer. They were tired of not sleeping well themselves from having to get up and look after their baby. They were frustrated that the pediatrician offered no solution or suggestions. Can you imagine what these two parents went through? Countless sleepless nights, listening to their baby cry and suffer not knowing what was wrong or how to help their newborn baby.
They called me from their hometown of Van Horn which is a two hour drive to El Paso. The grandmother on the mothers’ side told her daughter that you don’t take a baby to a Chiropractor. The grandparents on the baby’s father side had been my patients for many years and had seen me treating children and babies. I talked to the grandmother who did not believe in taking a baby to a Chiropractor and asked her to come with her daughter and the baby.
To make a long story short, I treated the 2 month old baby and in just three treatments baby Garrett was now able to hold his head upright and turn his head when called. He also now had grasping reflexes and was sleeping the whole night.
This newborn child was fortunate to have received the help of Chiropractic to reverse the damage caused by the use of forceps during his delivery.
There is also a device called Vacuum Extractor. It is also used in most, if not all, hospitals for assisted vaginal deliveries. According to an article I read on the web, Vacuum Extraction is gaining more popularity in place of Forceps.
However, I feel very strongly that midwives are better skilled and have more compassion and patience for vaginal deliveries. There are also no invasive medical interventions used to both the baby and the mother. You are not having to lie on you back, which women especially in the third trimester cannot do for more than a couple of minutes. Lying on your back when going into labor is what I believe leads to unnecessary c-sections. Check out my other article, I Had To Have An Emergency C-section.
They also offer the use of a birthing stool which my wife used when giving birth to our daughter. This allows gravity to assist in the delivery. What an amazing feeling it was to see this newborn baby respond so beautifully to Chiropractic Care and his own Innate healing response. Chiropractic is simply a vehicle to remove nerve interference from the nervous system that allows the body to heal!
