We use it every time we get out of bed. We use it every time we go to work. We use it every time we pick up the phone. We use it every time we do anything. We use it every single day. Do you know what the greatest power is? Did you know that each and everyone of us have that power? What is it? It is the power to CHOOSE.
Think about this for a minute. Each day when you wake up you may feel like you have to go to work. Most people do have a job and do go to work.
But I learned a long time ago that going to work is a choice. In fact, everything in life is a choice.
We may feel like we have to go to work but it really is a choice. You could choose to not go to work and not make any money.
It’s obviously a better choice to go to work than not, but it’s still a choice. And just like it’s a choice to go to work we can choose what kind of attitude we’re going to have today and everyday. We can choose to be happy or grumpy. We can choose to be upset or get angry if things don’t go our way or we can choose to look at problems as opportunities to learn from.
From the moment we wake up the only thing we have to do is make choices. We choose what we’re gong to wear that day, who we hang out with, what we eat, who we accept phone calls from and the list goes on and on.
We have the power to choose so many things that affect our lives. What’s amazing is that there are hundreds of doctors across the United States that acknowledge the majority of what people get sick from and most eventually die from are from poor lifestyle choices.
These are the things you choose to eat and drink everyday. I have taught my kids from a very early age how foods like candy, soda, snack foods taste good but are not good for you.
The less you eat or drink of these the better your health will be. I just read about a three year old little girl that started having ear pain and the pediatrician thought it was an ear infection. After a couple of months and different anti-biotics this little girl developed several other symptoms.
At one point she became seriously ill and was hospitalized for eight weeks. She had Cat Scans, MRI’s, spinal taps, blood work, urinalysis, and was put on many different prescription drugs. Her parents incurred $30,000 in medical bills and the doctors still did not have a definite diagnosis.
You can read the whole amazing story at Dr Janet Hull’s website www.askdrhull.com. The culprit was NutraSweet (aspartame) which also goes by the name of Equal. It was one of the main ingredients in their little girls’ chewable multi-vitamin. She was also consuming sugar-free yogurt which contained NutraSweet. She would occasionally sneak sips from her parents’ sugar free sodas.
You may be thinking the little three year old girl did not have a choice about what she was consuming. But now that her parents are aware of the dangers of those artificial sweeteners and you can rest assured they will be monitoring and reading food and drink labels very closely.
What about you? I know for many of you reading this article this information is not new to you. Yet you continue to use artificial sweeteners daily because there are no apparent or immediate life threatening side effects.
And it’s not only artificial sweeteners. Regular consumption of fried foods, excessive alcohol use, lack of physical activity and other poor lifestyle choices continue to the habits of too many people.
Many people have bought into the television commercials that these artificial sweeteners are safe. They must be. They were approved by the FDA. Right? The FDA would not allow something that is not safe to be approved. Would they?
If you still believe we can trust the FDA or the government, think back in time. Tobacco was actually promoted back in the 50’s by actors dressed as doctors stating that smoking was good for the digestion.
If you hear a lie often enough you will accept it as truth.
Our history is filled with lawsuits and cases won against the tobacco, pesticides, vaccines, fluoride and pharmaceutical companies.
I sincerely hope that if you were not aware of all this insanity and greed you now will accept this information as truth and realize that money talks and that we cannot depend on the government or the FDA to really protect the American people.
They protect the companies with the big money.
Oil, chemical, pharmaceutical, insurance and food companies have the largest special interest groups in Washington and spend the most amounts of money in campaign contributions to protect themselves. But remember one thing.
Even if the FDA approves prescription drugs, certain foods (genetically engineered) or chemical additives, you still have the power to choose to NOT consume that stuff.
Maybe you had not been aware of this information. You are now. What are you going to do about it. It’s easy to continue with the same old habits. How about making a few changes to your lifestyle choices. Start with one simple change and take it from there.
What else can you do? Spread the truth. Share your story. It is surprising how many people have similar stories like I have shared with you here.
Most importantly, stop believing that since a little Splenda or whatever sugar substitute you use hasn’t caused you any health problems, it must be OK. Don’t wait and see. Don’t become a victim of a tumor, kidney cancer or some other health problem later on down the road.
There are several safer natural alternative choices. remember it’s all about choices and habits. Don’t fall prey to being paranoid about a few calories. Your body can handle a little sugar. If you use moderation then it’s not an issue.
You have the greatest power in the world, the power to choose. It is your body and you only have one body in this lifetime. Decide and commit to make healthier choices. The number one cause of death today is no longer heart disease. It is cancer. Most cases of cancer are preventable through lifestyle choices. Most cases of heart diseases are also because of poor lifestyle choices. There’s that powerful word again, choices.
Make it your friend and not the cause of your demise. By being more aware and making better informed and well educated lifestyle choices, you are choosing to live a healthier, happier and longer life. You are using your God given power… the power to choose. Use it wisely!
The holidays are over and you’ve indulged in more foods, drinks and desserts than you normally do. It’s OK. I did too. We’re human and not robots. You can’t go to a Christmas party and not enjoy all the delicious foods and desserts that have been prepared.
If you simply could not control yourself over the holidays and you’re ready to make this a healthier year………..here are 7 simple techniques you can do to get yourself back on track. I like to call them the 7 Baby Steps to Health.
One of the keys to not gaining a ton of weight over the holidays or anytime is by being moderate. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. Moderate? Are you crazy? I love to eat especially during the holidays!!! Well, I do too, but let me share one technique that works for me. How? By using the taste technique. Notice I said taste….not pig out. I like using this technique much better than counting calories. Who knows how many calories are in all these foods? When it comes to weight loss, counting calories sounds good on paper but in reality it doesn’t work for me.
Another technique I find useful and works is what I call the baby plate technique. This is where you serve yourself on small plates. This way you can go back for seconds and you have not consumed a ton of food!
Remember we don’t need to eat such large quantities of food to nourish our bodies. Quite the contrary, eating large amounts of food is detrimental to your digestive organs. The pancreas, liver and gallbladder have to work overtime and that’s not good.
I know it can be difficult to only get a smaller than normal serving. But getting smaller servings by using small plates allows you to taste everything and not feel like you’re deprived without adding excessive calories to your plate.
Another step to better health is to start a walking routine. If you’re not that disciplined and won’t go walking by yourself get a walking partner. There are other people like you that are hoping to find someone to walk with.
Maybe you’re ready to make the commitment to improve your diet. You can start by eliminating sodas from your diet. (By the way, switching to diet sodas is not a healthy option. Those artificial sweeteners can cause anxiety, memory loss, not to mention many other side effects like cancer). Try replacing sodas with vegetable juice. I recycle the small plastic bottles of Propel and fill them 3/4 of the way with V8 add lemon juice and a dash of my spicy seasoning! It’s a tasty and nutritious breakfast drink on the drive to work or for lunch with a small salad or salmon burger! The added bonus is you are consuming more of the daily recommended servings of vegetables.
Another technique is to not eat out everyday for lunch. You could limit eating out to 2 or 3 times per week. Just think of the money you’ll save as well. Just prepare a simple lunch the night before and brown bag it. Your lunch could even be an apple with some peanut butter. That takes very little preparation.
The important thing is……. get started. Write out your plan(s) on 3×5 index cards. You may want to start with one thing. It could be as simple as writing something like this: 1. I will go walking everyday for 30 minutes. 15 minutes one way and 15 minutes back. Some people use the “I don’t have time. Most people get one hour for lunch. Use half the time to go for a short walk. No excuses!
Carry one of your index cards in you vehicle’s visor or somewhere where you will see it and read it everyday. Use a magnet to stick one on your refrigerator. Put one next to your bed on your nightstand.
Read your goals several times a day. One of the best ways to form a new habit is by repetition. I’ve been using this technique successfully for several years now.
Write a new index card every month. By the end of the first month, your initial baby step should be a new healthy habit! Every month add a new goal and within six months……. can you imagine the progress!!!
Let’s summarize: 1. Taste technique 2. Use smaller plates 3. Start walking 4. Improve your diet 5. Brown bag it 6. Write your goal(s) 7. Read your 3×5 card daily
Remember, the key is small changes over time….baby steps….which will increase your chances of accomplishing and maintaining your goals for a lifetime. If you have any of your own ideas that are working for you on ways to ease into healthy habits, I would love to hear from you.
