Abilify for Treating Depression, Bipolar, Schizophrenia or Causing Nasty Side Effects? By Dr. Gonzalez
The following information was taken from: MedTV.com
The most common Abilify side effects included:
Important Warning: Rare Abilify Side Effects
Some side effects occur in less than 2 percent of people taking Abilify. Because these side effects are so uncommon, it is difficult to tell whether they are actually caused by the medication or something else.
You may experience some or none of the Abilify side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a medicine that you have never tried. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking the drug, or something that “just does not seem right.” While it may not be a side effect, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
The following information was taken from the National Institute of Health Website
Important warning for older adults with dementia:
Studies have shown that older adults with dementia (a brain disorder that affects the ability to remember, think clearly, communicate, and perform daily activities and that may cause changes in mood and personality) who take antipsychotics (medications for mental illness) such as aripiprazole have an increased chance of death during treatment. Older adults with dementia may also have a greater chance of having a stroke or mini-stroke or other severe side effects during treatment. If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately: slow or difficult speech, sudden dizziness or faintness, weakness or numbness of an arm or leg, drowsiness, or difficulty swallowing.
Aripiprazole is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of behavior problems in older adults with dementia. Talk to the doctor who prescribed this medication if you, a family member, or someone you care for has dementia and is taking aripiprazole. For more information visit the FDA website: www.fda.gov/Drugs.
Important warning for people who have depression:
A small number of children, teenagers, and young adults (up to 24 years of age) who took medications for depression during clinical studies became suicidal (thinking about harming or killing oneself or planning or trying to do so). Children, teenagers, and young adults who take antidepressants to treat depression or other mental illnesses may be more likely to become suicidal than children, teenagers, and young adults who do not take antidepressants to treat these conditions. However, experts are not sure about how great this risk is and how much it should be considered in deciding whether a child or teenager should take an antidepressant. Children younger than 18 years of age should not normally take aripiprazole to treat depression, but in some cases, a doctor may decide that aripiprazole is the best medication to treat a child’s condition.
You should know that your mental health may change in unexpected ways when you take aripiprazole or other antidepressants even if you are an adult over age 24. You may become suicidal, especially at the beginning of your treatment and any time that your dose is increased or decreased. You, your family, or your caregiver should call your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: new or worsening depression; thinking about harming or killing yourself, or planning or trying to do so; extreme worry; agitation; panic attacks; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; aggressive behavior; irritability; acting without thinking; severe restlessness; and mania (frenzied, abnormally excited mood). Be sure that your family or caregiver knows which symptoms may be serious so they can call the doctor if you are unable to seek treatment on your own.
My thoughts and comments: Taking ANY prescription drug is risky. All other natural remedies should be considered first. Drugs and surgery are over-prescribed and over-used. I cannot believe how many times in one evening I have seen commercials for Abilify and other prescription drugs while trying to watch a little TV.
After listening to all the side effects I decided I would google and check the side effects for Abilify….UNBELIEVABLE!!! And what’s amazing is that ALL prescription drugs have MANY side effects. It is no wonder many Holistic doctors, scientists and health writers have stated the number one cause of death in the United States is prescription drugs, hospital and doctor errors. And the sad part is that millions of people continue taking theses pills… because their doctor prescribed them.
The good news is that there is an awakening of the consciousness of thousands of people. There is a healthcare revolution. We are going from “sick care” not healthcare to “self care”. People are learning that all those pills they have taken for years has not healed their bodies. They are learning that The Best Doctor For You Is You! www.hangingoutforthehealthofit.com/2011/01/doctor/
Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Naturopathy, Holistic Medicine, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, natural remedies and so many other natural treatments continue to grow by leaps and bounds!I hope you are in this group of people.
To Your Health … Naturally!
There are many good websites giving you advice on how to get a good night sleep. Most are good common sense suggestions like: Go to bed at a regular time so you do not disrupt the circadian rhythm; Your bedroom should not be too hot or too cold; Don’t eat a heavy meal right before bedtime; Drink a warm glass of milk before bed; Manage the stress and excessive worry and so on.
While these are all good tips for getting a good night sleep it is not an all inclusive list. If you have problems sleeping , it is crucial to find the root cause of why you are not getting a good night sleep. If you don’t know what the cause of your insomnia is how can you effectively treat the problem? The correct diagnosis leads to the proper treatment. This applies to any symptom or health concern.
We have been programmed by television commercials to take a pill for anything and everything that bothers us. If we a headache take a pill. Take two of these pills for all day relief of your arthritis pain. We can easily go to the drugstore and pick up a non-prescription drug for just about any symptom you may suffer from. The pharmaceutical companies figured out they would sell billions of dollars more if those drugs were available without a prescription. You have seen and heard the commercials ….”Now available without a doctor’s prescription”. While I’m not totally against these types of medicines, I am concerned about people self medicating for years and years with these types of pills and never correcting the problem. The problem is NOT your body lacking these pills.
The pharmaceutical companies also figured a way to get you to go to the doctor and ask for a specific drug. You have also seen and heard those commercials, “Ask your doctor if this medication is right for you”. You may have even gone to the doctor and asked for a prescription drug by name.
The bottom line is this. There are always going to be people that don’t want to make the lifestyle changes needed to get your body back in balance and healthy. It is much easier to drive down to the local drugstore and pick up some pills. Besides the commercials have brainwashed those people into believing that that acid reflux or GERD or heartburn is too much acid….so what you need is an acid blocker. The truth is you need to make some lifestyle changes. Most people need to improve their diet. You need to start adding more fruits and vegetables and less fried, packaged, snack foods, bleached white flour or even wheat as many people have gluten intolerance. I could go on and on but this article is about how to get a good night sleep. Read The Seven Healthy Habits and The Ten Most Common Causes of Pain And Disease
You’re probably saying to yourself, “I went to the doctor because I was having trouble sleeping but all he/she did was prescribe sleeping pills”. Yes sleeping pills can help get you to sleep but sleeping pills have limited uses. They may help, for example, during an overnight airplane ride or taken during a crisis. The problems with sleeping pills is they can be addictive and in many cases leaving you feeling groggy the next day. Doctors and patients have come to learn that long-term use has more risks than benefits. Today, most insomnia patients are not prescribed sleeping pills and most insomnia patients who do take drugs use them briefly.
Excessive alcohol intake (more then 2 drinks) can also do the same thing. But is that what you really want to do. I don’t think so. You need to find the cause of why you are not getting a good night sleep. This is why I also teach my patients The Best Doctor For You Is You. Read the full article here
In summary you need to find out WHY you are not getting a good night sleep. What is the cause? Is it stress? Financial problems, poor diet, lack of exercise, a problem in your spine especially in the neck can be the cause or causes of you not getting a good night sleep. With this in mind here are The 7 Best Tips To Get A Good Night Sleep.
1. Exercise- By far one of the best and safest ways to get a good night sleep, feel good and get healthy is exercise. Whether it’s a 45 minute Zumba Dance workout or a fast paced walk for 45-60 minutes it will help you tremendously. Obviously if you are just starting out you may want to start with a 15-20 minute workout and then gradually build up.
2. Nutrition- You are what you eat. Period. If you eat and drink junk foods and high sugar, high caffeine drinks your body will eventually malfunction.
3. Lights out- Night lights or alarm clock lights can be disturbing. Cover with a hand towel.
4. Sounds – Your partner snoring can be disturbing and affect you being able to sleep well. Use ear plugs, have your partner use nasal strips, better pillow, sleep on their side. Use calming sounds like relaxing music to help you fall asleep.
5. Spinal problems particularly in the neck can cause insomnia. Get your spine checked by a Chiropractic Spine Specialist.
6. Reduce/Eliminate Stress- Stop worrying about things which you have no control. Read How To Stop Worrying And Start Living by Dale Carnegie. Read some other positive inspiring book every night 15-30 minutes at bedtime.
7. Meditation- Learn and practice this powerful technique which has gained enormous popularity in the last decade.
Obviously there are many more good tips than this short list. For more a extensive and detailed list go to:
Remember the important thing is to find the reason/cause of why you are not able to get a good night sleep. If you cannot figure it out on your own get help from a healthcare professional who will educate not just medicate.
Everyone has heard that statement before. I think it is one of the most ridiculous statements ever. Let me explain. A friend of mine recently told me that she did not need Chiropractic Care because her back did not hurt.
My reply was, “Would you wait to have a heart attack to start doing something for your heart? Would you wait to have a flat tire in the middle of the night on the freeway to do something about it? Or would you wait until your car’s engine broke and left you stranded before doing something about it? In all of these scenarios you want to do what’s called prevention.
The same principle applies to your body. Most people are programmed to wait until something goes wrong and then they run to the doctor and expect the doctor to fix it. That’s called being reactive. You’re reacting to a situation.
The opposite of that is being proactive. That involves taking a preventative approach to your health. Things like not smoking, not drinking alcohol excessively, keeping your weight normal, exercising regularly, getting regular Chiropractic care, hanging upside down, massage to help manage the stress and so forth.
Just like the warning signals in your vehicle to warn you that the oil is low or that the brakes need to be changed our bodies also have warning signs. They’re called symptoms such as headaches, pain, digestive problems like heart burn and acid reflux, allergies like food sensitivities (gluten intolerance, lactose intolerance) and many others.
The mistake many people make is that they’ve been programmed, brainwashed, miseducated about what to do when those warning signs come on.
For example, headaches and migraines are so common in our society. Most people take over the counter pills based on thousands of commercials they’ve seen on television for the last twenty five years telling them that if they have a headache they need to take X brand of pills for their headaches.
The problem with that approach is you never correct the cause. So you go through life taking pills for this and that and then you can develop side effects from all those pills only to take more pills for those new symptoms. It’s a never ending viscous cycle.
A new patient of mine was going through the viscous cycle of pills and more pills. She finally had enough when the neurologist wanted to refer her to a psychiatrist. She asked her husband to make the appointment with the doctor that pops the spine. This lady has been suffering from migraines, dizziness, neck pain, numbness in her hands, overweight and always in a bad mood. She doesn’t like taking the pills and commented about how weird they make her feel. She admitted that she has a horrible diet. I explained how I could help her but that ultimately she would need to replace some of those bad habits with some new healthy ones. We’ll see how committed she is in turning her poor health around.
This patient has had plenty of warning signs but had been ignoring them and when she finally went to the doctor all they did for her was give her pills and more pills every time she went back.
If you don’t have any warning signs going off that might be good. But that might also give you a false sense of security thinking that because there is no pain there’s no problem. Do you want to wait until you have degenerative discs or osteoarthritis to start doing something about it? Doesn’t it make more sense to do what you can to prevent problems from ever happening? It sure does to me. Especially since I know the importance of the spine and nervous system.
Some people get it some never will. I’m not waiting around until something gets broken. I’m going to do everything I can to prevent those problems from happening in the first place.
What about you?

Are You Functioning with a Dead Battery?
What happens to a car that sits in the driveway for a long time? The battery goes dead. It will need a jump from a battery that is not dead to get it started. So you jump-start it and then you drive it around the block once or twice and then park it in the driveway. The battery will go dead again because you did not drive it long enough for the battery to fully recharge. You then have to jump-start it again. Pretty soon that battery is not going to jump-start anymore and you’re going to need to buy a new battery.
Many people get up in the morning with a dead battery even after sleeping all night. They might not have had a good restful night sleep because they ate late, ate too much or ate a very heavy meal late in the evening. It seems like stress is many peoples middle name today. Stress and worrying will also interfere from getting a good night sleep. Headaches and tension are so common today. Relationships don’t last and marriages end up in divorce. Financial problems are probably one of the biggest causes of stress and divorce. Money problems create more problems and things escalate. Many people neglect to take care of their health. Many times people don’t realize just how poor their health really is. Yes they get up in the mornings, reluctantly and not eager to go to work. They get through the morning with a couple of cups of caffeine and a donut. They overeat at lunch but somehow manage to make it through the afternoon. They get home after work exhausted and then plop on the sofa to watch TV for hours and eat another low fiber, high fat, high calorie dinner. The most exercise many people get is walking to the mailbox.
These types of people don’t complain much. Some people have learned to live with their health problems. They are used to the usual headaches, sinus problems, allergies, constipation, acid reflux, heartburn, asthma, anxiety, migraines and a few other symptoms that I forgot to mention. It’s amazing how many people believe that these are normal everyday problems that everyone has. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular problems are the result of continued poor lifestyle choices.
They do this routine for several years. They don’t exercise and they wonder why they don’t have any energy and get headaches all the time. They go to their medical doctor and the never-ending prescription drug roller coaster ride begins. If this sounds like what you have been going through please take a minute to really think about where your health is headed. It’s amazing how many people are just alive. I mean they are breathing, talking, working and just getting by. They are not living up to their full potential. This is a life far from the true vitality and energy that the body was designed for. They have health issues, but since they are not life threatening some people will ignore the warning signs. Others self medicate because so many prescription drugs are now available without a prescription. Just turn on the TV any time of the day or night and you know what I’m talking about. Those feel good commercials telling you that you don’t need a doctors’ prescription to buy the latest symptom relieving drug that will make you feel good.
You Can Do It!
So when was the last time you felt really good? When was the last time you felt good without taking any prescription drugs, illegal drugs, alcohol, sugar or caffeine? Maybe it’s been a while. Maybe it’s been a really long time. The good news is that you can change all that. But only YOU can change it. You might need some help and that’s why I wrote this article. To help you as much or as little as you want. You decide. It is unfortunate that sometimes it takes a good scare like surviving a heart attack before one makes the commitment to a much needed change of lifestyle. For some people it’s a divorce and for others it’s a trip to the hospital and having a doctor tell you that if you don’t stop drinking you will die from an inflamed pancreas and liver failure. But WHATEVER IT TAKES, JUST DO IT. Just like the Nike commercial says, “Just Do It.” You have so much to gain. Do it for a loved one, for your children, for yourself. Do whatever it takes, but just do it.
Too many people are in denial. They think that since they do not feel horribly bad that they are okay. But the absence of pain does not mean you are OK. Pain is only one signal telling you that something is wrong. Other warning signs are: Headaches, high blood pressure, constipation, arthritis, colds, allergies, numbness in the arms, hands, feet or legs. Still other warning signs are: nausea, lack of energy, insomnia, acid reflux, heartburn, joint pain and the list goes on and on. Medical treatment is a different pill for all of these different warning signs. But as you probably already know the pills do not correct the problems or the causes. Refer back to The Ten Most Common Causes Of Pain And Disease . If you have any of the above symptoms you are likely violating one or more of The Ten Causes. Next look at the Seven Healthy Habits. Follow those as best as you can and you will see improvements in your health and vitality. Sometimes your health can make a dramatic improvement within a couple of weeks.
If your life is out of control, please don’t be embarrassed to ask for help. Get professional counseling, talk to someone who cares and make that commitment to yourself. You are worth it. If you don’t make the commitment, who will do it for you? If not now, when? Do it now that you are thinking about it. It’s too easy to put it off until tomorrow. Do it now while all of this information is still fresh on your mind. If it is late at night I urge you to just get up and write a simple goal or plan to get started. If you are serious about your life and health you will write something down. Just get started and do it. Write something as simple as “I will start taking better care of myself.” Or, “I will go walking thirty minutes every day.” Just start making one simple change at a time. As the weeks go by add to your goals. Re-write them when necessary. The hardest part is getting started. Once you get started you will gain momentum. Recruit a friend, spouse, children or co-worker to start doing something healthy together. When you support each other and hold each other accountable there is less room for failure.
It is wonderful to be able to wake up without needing an alarm clock and all those toxic jump-starters to get the day going. The first thing you could do is go for a morning walk. Many people get up an extra hour earlier and go to a gym or simply go for their morning walk. It really takes only thirty to forty minutes of moderate exercise to feel really good and energized all day. Equally important is to feed your body nutritional foods. Many people think that since they exercise they can eat whatever they want. I have proven how wrong that thinking is many times to myself. If you exercise it is extremely important that you eat healthy too. If you are thirty years old or younger you might still get away with eating not so healthy. Living in El Paso, TX, the Mexican food capital of the country, it’s easy to forget about eating healthy and instead have some Mexican food. My opinion is that you can reward yourself once in a while. Follow the 90/10 rule, which I explain at the end of this chapter. This way it tastes really good because you are not eating that stuff all the time. Remember that the key to success is consistency and moderation.
Believe it or not you CAN and NEED to be your own best doctor. Very few doctors will tell you, “Look, what you really need to do is change your lifestyle, your eating habits, exercise, lose that excess weight you’ve been carrying for years, quit smoking and drinking so much, have your spine adjusted by a good chiropractor and get a massage regularly. This way I don’t have to prescribe drugs to make you feel better and help you get through the day.”
I am not talking about being your own doctor if you have a heart attack, break an arm or some other type of situation that requires immediate emergency type of care. What I am saying is that you can be your own doctor and prevent heart attacks in the first place. Most of the health problems people find themselves suffering from occur because of their lifestyle choices. What you eat, drink, breathe and do with your body. When a patient comes to me, aside from some type of trauma, I explain to them that their health issues are a result of their own doing. Many people know this already, they just need to hear it from a doctor that cares and is not just going to give them a bunch of pills to suppress their symptoms. You know what you do with your body twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You basically know what kinds of foods are nourishing to your body and what kinds of foods are not. Remember, let food be your medicine and medicine be your food. You know how much or how little you exercise. The body is not going to function very well if you just sit at work all day and feed your body good tasting, lifeless junk full of artificial chemicals, preservatives, emulsifiers, artificial colors, flavor enhancers that cause dozens of health problems.
There are many excellent books on the subject of nutrition, eating the right foods for optimum health and energy. See the recommended reading list in the section on Foods, Diet and Nutrition. The more natural your diet (raw fruits and vegetables, whole grains, purified water, less meats) the better. Stay away from fast foods, packaged foods with added synthetic chemicals whose names you cannot pronounce. If you eat wholesome foods you don’t have to overeat to satisfy your hunger. Eat to nourish your body not to feel full or stuffed. Supplement your diet with good quality vitamins and minerals. Get off the couch and away from the TV and do a little exercise four to five times a week. Put an exercise bike in front of your TV. Most gyms have multiple TV’s in the cardio rooms.
It’s so sad to see so many patients coming to see me who are in their fifty’s and sixty’s who have been on all kinds of prescription drugs for years but still suffers with the same symptoms but now a few more from the side effects of those drugs. It didn’t have to turn out that way. People are getting smarter and beginning to realize that. But now it’s a lot harder to reverse all those years of poor lifestyle choices and poor habits that were simply masked and covered up by prescription drugs.
Let me share a story with you. For several years I kept suggesting to my sister, Mary, to start walking after work. She would emphatically tell me, “You don’t understand. How do you expect me to go walking? By the time I get home after working all day I’m exhausted.” Mary owns a flower shop so I know that she was not doing manual work all day. Yes she was on her feet a lot but that was better than sitting at a desk all day. What she was really saying was that going for walks was not part of her routine and life. It was not a habit of hers. It was something that she was not used to doing. I would also educate her on making better choices with her diet. Specifically, the need to eat more fruits and raw vegetables. Gradually her diet improved. A couple of years later she finally started walking after work. Soon she reported that she was having a difficult time getting to sleep because she had so much energy after walking. Soon her body got used to it and she felt better and had more energy during the day. Walking was now a new habit and part of her weekly routine.
Some habits are hard to change. One morning I’m at my sister’s house. We were going to go walking. I watched as she sat and bent over to tie her tennis shoes. That was the way she was used to doing it. I mentioned to her that I teach my patients not to bend over like that because it puts a lot of pressure to the lower thoracic and lumbar spine. It is especially bad for the last disc in the spine or the L5 disc. She asked, “How should I tie my shoes?” I explained that she could sit and cross one leg and tie her shoe and then cross the other leg and tie that shoe. The other way is to cross your legs to put your shoes on and then stand and put your foot on a chair or stool and tie your shoes that way. A couple of days later I was at her house again and guess what? She went to tie her shoes just like before. As soon as I started to remind her she quickly made the correction and crossed her legs. Old habits are sometimes hard to change. But they can be changed and replaced with new and better habits. Got any old habits that you need to get rid of? What are you waiting for? If not now, then when? If you don’t do it, then who will? Just do it. Do it now. Do it now. Repetition, repetition, repetition. Repeat good habits to replace bad ones.
Scientists say that it takes twenty-one days to form a new habit. Dr. Maxwell Maltz wrote the bestseller Psycho-Cybernetics. Originally a Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Maltz noticed that it took twenty-one days for amputees to cease feeling phantom sensations in the amputated limb. From further observations he found it took twenty-one days to create a new habit. Since then the ‘Twenty One Day Habit Theory’ has become an accepted part of self-help programs. Brain circuits take engrams, which are memory traces, and produce neuroconnections and neuropathways only if they are bombarded for twenty-one days in a row. This means that our brain does not accept ‘new’ data for a change of habit unless it is repeated each day for twenty-one days (without missing a day).
You can take charge of your own health. It is in YOUR BEST INTEREST. There are a lot of references that you can use to help you. I have mentioned many throughout my book. They have done the research for you. You just need to do some reading. This is no different than the saying, “You get out of it what you put into it.” It’s like one of the Universal Laws. Your health is worth putting a lot of energy into it. You’ll get back what you put in.
There are also many excellent Chiropractic, Naturopathic and Homeopathic Doctors who can help you. There are also some very good massage therapists, acupuncturists, personal trainers who can all become part of your health care team. You don’t have to do it alone.
To those of you that have made the commitment to a healthier, happier and longer life, CONGRATULATIONS! You are on your way to feeling so much better and preventing years of pain and suffering. Be patient. Change takes time. Healing takes time. Follow THE SEVEN HEALTHY HABITS. Your health and quality of life depends on it. Remember, without health you have nothing, with good health you have everything! Start making better choices little by little. You CAN do it!
Lack of energy is so common today. Does it affect you? What about pain, sickness or disease? In this post I’d like to remind you of some basics so you too can enjoy a healthy, vibrant body and prevent lack of energy, pain, sickness and disease.
The brain, spinal cord and all the nerves connect to the spinal cord also connect to EVERY organ, gland, muscle and joint of your body. These nerves are what carry/transmit the electricity that makes your body work. If the hear, which is basically a muscle acting as a pump did not have the nerve energy or life force coming from that nerve the heart would not work. The same goes for any other organ in your body. The lungs would not work, the stomach would not work and the muscles would not work if they did not have that electrical energy being transmitted through the nerves. This network of nerves together with your brain and spinal cord are the “MASTER SYSTEM” of your body. This Master System controls and directs ALL functions of the human body.
That being said…..if there is an interruption in that flow of energy or electricity …there will be a malfunction. There will be lack of energy, pain sickness or disease.
For example, if there is an interruption of energy to the nerves that control the heart there will be a problem with the heart. It could be in the form of tachycardia (rapid heart beat), bradycardia (slow heart beat) or palpitations or arrhythmia’s (irregular heart beat). I like to explain it by using the analogy of a light with a dimmer switch. You want the light on in the middle position. If there is too much electricity flowing through then the light bulb is too bright. If there is not enough electrical energy the light bulb is too dim.
Not all problems with the heart are caused by an interruption of nerve flow energy. Some other causes of heart problems are prescription drugs, lack of nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and potassium.
I always recommend when anyone experiences health problems to look at the basics first. If you are having issues with your heart doesn’t it make sense to look at the wiring or the nerve energy flow to make sure there is no interruption of that nerve energy to your heart? It is certainly the easiest and least risky procedure. How? Chiropractic.
Yes a medical doctor can give you prescription drugs to try and help regulate your heart beat…. BUT…that also come with SIDE EFFECTS. Remember ALL prescription drugs have side effects and the most important thing to realize is that those pills do not correct the cause.
I once read a saying, “Chiropractic first, drugs second, surgery last”. That made a lot of sense to me.
To recap…. if you have a health problem… headaches, back pain, ear infection, asthma, …look for the cause of the problem. Check the spine and the nerve energy. Are you eating healthy or overloading your body with chemicals such as Splenda, sucralose, aspartame etc.? Google the side effects of these artificial sweeteners. You will be amazed at what you will find. Don’t believe the commercial on Splenda…..that it’s natural because it’s made from sugar. What the commercial fails to disclose is that it’s CHLORINATED SUGAR. Do you think it’s healthy to eat/drink chlorine?
How is your posture? Are you getting some form of exercise on a regular basis. The body needs to move and keep lubricated. in order to have a healthy and vibrant body.
Are you drinking enough pure water or are you drinking too much soda, coffee, tea, booze? Get back to the basics… eat/drink healthy 80% of the time, get some regular exercise, practice good posture, manage stress before it manages you, love what you do..do what you love and try to laugh a little every day :>)
Can Carrying School Backpacks Cause Neck Pain, Headaches, Muscle Tension and Spinal Problems? By Dr. Gonzalez
Has anyone else been having problems with their kids’ school backpacks being too heavy? Got a call from a patient yesterday that her daughter has been complaining of neck pain, shoulder pain and headaches. The mom is asking if it could be the backpack. She checked it and said it weighed about 20 lbs.
Yes, back packs can place a lot of stress and tension to the
neck, shoulder muscles and spine. Heavy backpacks can also contribute to the problems associated with scoliosis, which is an abnormal curvature of the spine. A recent study conducted in Italy found that the average child carries a backpack that would be the equivalent of a 39-pound burden for a 176-pound man or a 29-pound load for a 132-pound woman. Of those children carrying heavy backpacks to school, 60 percent had experienced back pain as a result. In 2001, backpacks were the cause of 7,000 emergency room visits and numerous complaints of muscle spasms, neck and shoulder pain. The problem has become so widespread, in fact, the California State Assembly passed legislation that would force school districts to develop ways of reducing the weight of students’ backpacks. Similar legislation is being considered in New Jersey as well with more states to likely follow.
The damage these heavy backpacks cause really depends on how
much weight is being carried. Most kids nowadays carry many books in their backpacks and can weigh 20-30 lbs. If a child weighs 100 lbs. and that child is carrying a 20 lb. backpack that is 20% of that child’s body weight. That is too much weight. If your child walks to the school bus stop or walks to school that is too heavy of a load to be carrying around. If they don’t carry the back pack the way it was designed to be worn then all the weight is being transferred to
only one shoulder. Even if they are being carried on both shoulders the backpacks are too heavy and cause many children to lean way forward which cause stress to the spine and muscles.
Most doctors and physical therapists recommend that kids carry no more than 10% to 15% of their body weight in their packs. So if your child weighs 100 lbs., your child’s back pack should not weigh more
than 15% or 15 lbs. Check out this website for more information on how you can minimize some of the problems associated with backpacks: http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/consumerawareness/a/backpacktips.htm
What can you do?
There are different types of back packs and book bags to consider. Shoulder bags are popular with some kids but place too much strain
because they only have one strap. If your child wants one of those bags make sure it is to be used ONLY if they don’t have lots of books to be carrying around. A good back pack should have wide padded straps and several compartments to distribute the weight better. The
straps should be snug and not so loose that the backpack hangs too low. Check out these backpacks at http://www.airpacks.com/products.shtm
Ask the teacher if you can get a second set of heavy text books for home if possible. Or ask the teacher to use handouts instead of textbooks for homework. Some states have already begun to embrace the use of E-books and online assignments in place of heavy bulky textbooks.
Here is a handy chart to help you figure what weight limit your child should be carrying.
What You Need To Know BEFORE You Are In a Car Crash!
For approximately the last twenty years the insurance industry has trained their claims adjustors to believe that if someone has been involved in a minor car crash the people in the vehicle could not possibly be hurt. And if those people seek care and file a claim for medical payments they and the doctors are probably committing fraud.
While there have been problems in the past with some people staging accidents and filing false claims, it is irresponsible to promote that ALL people involved in ALL minor car crashes are not hurt and are simply filing fraudulent claims.
The insurance industry spent millions of dollars on billboards, radio and TV ads promoting “STOP LAWSUIT ABUSE” to the public. You may recall seeing or hearing one of those ads. They did this so that if you were picked on a jury for a car crash case “STOP LAWSUIT ABUSE” would be fresh on your mind and you would think these people were not really hurt and just filing false claims. This scheme together with the courtroom drama by the attorneys that represent the insurance companies would usually be enough to render a decision in favor of the insurance company to NOT provide for any medical payments or for pain and suffering for the innocent car crash victim(s). Furthermore, these ads may lead you to falsely believe if YOU were in a minor car crash, sought medical treatment and filed a claim you might be committing fraud.
I have testified in court dozens of times as a Doctor of Chiropractic and Expert Witness for my patients. The attorney protecting the insurance company would do everything in his/her power to protect the insurance company he/she is representing from not having to pay any money or as little as possible. The attorneys bring up issues like why did you wait two weeks before seeking care…because if you were really hurt you would have sought care right away. The truth is many people try to tough it out and self medicate until they realize that the pain is not going away and in some cases is getting worse. The insurance company’s attorney will look for everything and anything to try to discredit you and your doctor. This is why it is IMPORTANT to be examined as soon as possible. It is even more important that you be seen by a specialist who is trained specifically in whiplash and spinal trauma AND will document ALL your injuries properly. This is VERY IMPORTANT! I cannot stress the importance of this. Get seen right away by a specialist trained in whiplash and spinal trauma. A big mistake is to see your family doctor who does not likely have this type of specific training.
If you are taken to the emergency room know that the fees for the ambulance are high and the ER visit will also be very costly. Make sure you have the proper insurance coverage or if you were struck by another vehicle that person has insurance to cover those bills.
If you do go to the Emergency Room, unless you have severe injuries, the doctor at the hospital may tell you there is nothing wrong or nothing seriously wrong and that you may be sore for a few days. The doctor may refer you to an orthopedic surgeon or simply tell you to follow up with your family doctor. Unless you really need surgery why would you go to an orthopedic surgeon? Because your attorney wants you too. It makes your case look better. That’s another discussion not covered here.
The next issue is do you really need an attorney? NO, not in every case although some attorneys will disagree with me. Some people end up seeing one of those attorneys that advertise heavily on TV. While this is OK, some of these law firms see so many people you probably will never speak with the attorney but will talk with the paralegal. Some of these attorneys don’t even live in El Paso or in your city. They will usually send you to one of their “preferred” clinics for treatment. The treatments are sometimes not the best. If you are in this situation and you are not getting results, you have the right to switch doctors. A recent new patient of mine told me this happened to her and she only saw the Chiropractor one time. Her case settled she got a small amount of money and she still hurts. This is in essence YOUR money being spent. It should be money well spent. You have the right to choose where you go and get treated. You want to go where the doctor has a good reputation and where you will get good RESULTS. Likewise you want an attorney who is going to really look after you and not just HIS/HER bank account. Be smart and don’t believe everything you see on those TV commercials.
There are some people that may have been involved in a minor car crash and think they are not really hurt. They think they are just a little sore or have very mild pain. When the soreness or mild pain usually does go away they think they are OK. Because the mild pain or soreness went away this may not necessarily be an indication that everything is OK. Too often I have seen many patients come back a month or two or later complaining now of headaches, back or neck pain.
In other cases, the pain never really goes away but lingers. Because the pain is very mild and tolerable some people will not go and get examined. This is dangerous because the spine could be injured and misaligned. This may cause mild pain, some discomfort or NO pain at all. If the spine is not properly aligned and corrected it can develop into osteoarthritis, disc problems and affect you in the future.
There are many other issues like…”Where do I have to take my car to get fixed?” “Will they use new or used parts?” “Am I entitled to a rental car while my car is getting fixed”? “How long can I keep the rental car?” There are other issues involving your car, your medical treatments and your compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages etc. The important thing is…. if you have been involved in ANY type of car crash GET SEEN RIGHT AWAY BY A SPECIALIST TRAINED IN WHIPLASH. Don’t put if off thinking you have to get approval from the insurance company. Many times they waste precious time and stall in returning your phone calls or they will offer you a few hundred dollars in hopes that you accept and sign a waiver to any future claims. DO NOT sign that disclaimer. One final note…. take pictures of all vehicles involved and of any bruises or cuts you may have. The police report may state there was minor damage when it was not. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Also keep a pain journal explaining how the pain has affected your life.
I have successfully been treating these types of injuries for over 23 years. I want to help you get the best treatment you are entitled to and deserve.
What Insurance Companies and Some Attorneys Do Not Want You To Know If You Have Been In A Car Crash! By Dr. Gonzalez
There has been lots of research done on whiplash and minor car crash by Dr Arthur Croft and the Spine Research Institute of San Diego, Society of Automotive Engineers, National Institute of Health (NIH) using crash test dummies and live volunteers. Research proved that even a car crash at 5 mph can cause injuries to the neck. Another surprising fact to many people is that the NIH found that 53% of the people involved in car crashes and suffered whiplash type of injuries never fully recover! They end up with chronic, permanent, lifetime pain. This does not mean that they are totally disabled but they will suffer with that mild to severe neck pain for the rest of their lives! There are 7 handouts explaining all this and much more that I use to explain to my patients and then it becomes part of their medical record in case we need to go to court.
Furthermore, these ads may lead you to falsely believe if YOU were in a minor car crash, sought medical treatment and filed a claim YOU might be committing fraud.
Some insurance companies especially one that claims “You are in Good Hands” may put part of the blame on you for the car crash. They will allege that you are 20% liable and they will now only pay for 80% of the damages to your car. This is abuse by the insurance company.
I have testified in court dozens of times as a Doctor of Chiropractic and Expert Witness for my patients. They want it documented that you did go to the Emergency Room and preferably by ambulance.

If the insurance company is going to give you a less than fair amount for your car who will fight for you. Be smart and don’t believe everything you see on TV commercials.
