Too many people think that once they get out of pain they can go back to their old habits that got them into trouble in the first place. I was having a conversation with a couple of patients this morning and teaching them part of The Seven Healthy Habits. Posture is so important and many adults and children have NEVER been taught correct postures.
For example, when you read, instead of dropping your head down you should hold up whatever you are reading. You can prop it up on your lap, on the desk, or use a book stand. I can’t tell you how many times I have been at a Sunday Service and see so many people dropping their heads to read and follow along in their Bibles. Improper head posture causes neck and upper back tension, headaches, shoulder pain, arm tingling and a few other symptoms. I just want to run up and grab the microphone and teach a class on proper head posture. I did send our pastor an e-mail about this subject. I also love going to schools to teach proper posture to students too. You can also practice looking down with your eyes instead of bending your head forward. It takes a little practice and pretty soon you will have formed a new good habit.
Doing house chores is another area where Proper Posture Rules are violated daily. When you are picking things up from the floor, ALWAYS BEND YOUR KNEES AND SQUAT, DON’T bend at the waist. When mopping and sweeping, keep your back straight and slightly bend your knees. I always remind my patients with low back problems, especially those with disc herniations, they need to AVOID sitting a lot. Sit no more than 20-30 minutes. Stand up walk around and stretch a little. When you finish doing chores most people go and sit on the sofa to rest. While your legs do rest by sitting down, gravity is still compressing your spine and discs. When you do sit, make sure you are sitting up. You can use a cushion or pillow behind your back for support. Make sure you place it in the low back area for proper support.
I see way too many people that don’t sit up straight. This is a one of the most neglected postures. This “slouching” causes your spine to literally “deform” and when you do try to straighten up it is uncomfortable, so you go back to “slouching”.
This bad habit cycle needs to be broken and form a good new habit. It takes some conscious effort. It also requires reshaping the spine through Chiropractic adjustments and some specific exercises. Hanging upside down (Inversion) is excellent for spinal problems. So remember, when you’re finished with your chores, it is best to lie down. Lie down on the sofa with a pillow between your knees and use an ice pack for 15-20 minutes if you have pain. Ice is much safer than taking pain pills.
I recommend to only resort taking pills if the pain is so severe that using an ice pack does not work. Some people will want to take the ice pack off because of the burning sensation they feel after a minute or two, but you need to wait a few more minutes and it will NUMB the pain. Using an ice pack will also reduce the inflammation. You may need to repeat using an ice pack every hour.
Remember ICE is NICE! It is natural and will not cause the side effects that pain pills cause, especially with prolonged use. You may also need to use the ice pack for several days. Be patient. Read my blog on How to Find the Right Chiropractor For You. A good Chiropractor will help you to a speedy recovery.
I hope this information has helped you. I will be posting some instructional videos soon. I know I’ve been talking about doing this for some time now, but it will happen. Be patient. In the meantime, practice your new postures. Teach your children well. Share this information with others and together we can live healthier, happier and longer lives!
Lack of energy is so common today. Does it affect you? What about pain, sickness or disease? In this post I’d like to remind you of some basics so you too can enjoy a healthy, vibrant body and prevent lack of energy, pain, sickness and disease.
The brain, spinal cord and all the nerves connect to the spinal cord also connect to EVERY organ, gland, muscle and joint of your body. These nerves are what carry/transmit the electricity that makes your body work. If the hear, which is basically a muscle acting as a pump did not have the nerve energy or life force coming from that nerve the heart would not work. The same goes for any other organ in your body. The lungs would not work, the stomach would not work and the muscles would not work if they did not have that electrical energy being transmitted through the nerves. This network of nerves together with your brain and spinal cord are the “MASTER SYSTEM” of your body. This Master System controls and directs ALL functions of the human body.
That being said…..if there is an interruption in that flow of energy or electricity …there will be a malfunction. There will be lack of energy, pain sickness or disease.
For example, if there is an interruption of energy to the nerves that control the heart there will be a problem with the heart. It could be in the form of tachycardia (rapid heart beat), bradycardia (slow heart beat) or palpitations or arrhythmia’s (irregular heart beat). I like to explain it by using the analogy of a light with a dimmer switch. You want the light on in the middle position. If there is too much electricity flowing through then the light bulb is too bright. If there is not enough electrical energy the light bulb is too dim.
Not all problems with the heart are caused by an interruption of nerve flow energy. Some other causes of heart problems are prescription drugs, lack of nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and potassium.
I always recommend when anyone experiences health problems to look at the basics first. If you are having issues with your heart doesn’t it make sense to look at the wiring or the nerve energy flow to make sure there is no interruption of that nerve energy to your heart? It is certainly the easiest and least risky procedure. How? Chiropractic.
Yes a medical doctor can give you prescription drugs to try and help regulate your heart beat…. BUT…that also come with SIDE EFFECTS. Remember ALL prescription drugs have side effects and the most important thing to realize is that those pills do not correct the cause.
I once read a saying, “Chiropractic first, drugs second, surgery last”. That made a lot of sense to me.
To recap…. if you have a health problem… headaches, back pain, ear infection, asthma, …look for the cause of the problem. Check the spine and the nerve energy. Are you eating healthy or overloading your body with chemicals such as Splenda, sucralose, aspartame etc.? Google the side effects of these artificial sweeteners. You will be amazed at what you will find. Don’t believe the commercial on Splenda…..that it’s natural because it’s made from sugar. What the commercial fails to disclose is that it’s CHLORINATED SUGAR. Do you think it’s healthy to eat/drink chlorine?
How is your posture? Are you getting some form of exercise on a regular basis. The body needs to move and keep lubricated. in order to have a healthy and vibrant body.
Are you drinking enough pure water or are you drinking too much soda, coffee, tea, booze? Get back to the basics… eat/drink healthy 80% of the time, get some regular exercise, practice good posture, manage stress before it manages you, love what you do..do what you love and try to laugh a little every day :>)
Have you ever driven by a restaurant but were afraid to go in for fear of being disappointed? I have. And then a friend of yours told you about how good the food was and you finally check it out, thinking OMG! Why didn’t I come sooner?
The same thing happens in many areas of our lives. It’s human nature to stick to the same old stuff, the same routines, the same old habits. I’ve read that most people eat only about 15 foods. That’s it! My eating habits have changed drastically over the last twenty years. I eat foods now I never ate before and didn’t even know what they were. A big part of that is getting more educated about what is really healthy and what is not and willing to try new stuff.
It reminds me of this quote, “It’s better to know and be disappointed or not… than to never know and always wonder.” How many times have you wondered, What if? What if I had gone there, tasted that, done that or said that. Could of, should of, would of.
As a Chiropractor I often wonder how do people live without Chiropractic care. Well it’s simple. “You Don’t Know What You Are Missing Until You Know What You’ve Been Missing”. You have nothing to compare it to. Many people don’t realize just how much stress and tension they have until they have had a good chiropractic adjustment. People say things like, “I had no idea I was so tight” or “Wow! I feel so much lighter, taller, better!”
I’m always looking for ways or products to improve health and help me and my patients feel better. I went to a Conference in Hawaii 23 years ago on new treatments for the spine. That is where I first experienced pain relief from Inversion. I was fortunate to have discovered Inversion by accident. I was not in a lot of pain but it was rather a dull ache. My first reaction was, “OMG! Where do I get one of these machines!? My lower back felt instantly better. It felt really good! It was one of those situations where “You Don’t Know What You Are Missing Until You Know What You’ve Been Missing”. Needless to say, I have been using Inversion personally and on thousands of my patients since that Conference.
But here’s the funny thing. When I talk to people about it, I’m so passionate about Inversion. People tell me “You are really passionate about this aren’t you?” But not everyone gets as excited as me or wants to try it. It goes back to habits and not knowing what you have been missing.
Here’s what I’d like to leave you with. Life is so full of surprises. You just need to discover and form new habits. You’ve got to be willing to try new things. I promise your life will be so much better! When it comes to Inversion…..who knows it might be the missing thing to living a Healthier, Happier and Pain Free Life!
