I just learned that the White House is planting an all year garden using hoop houses. You can check out the story at this link.
Sam Kass, an assistant White House chef and food initiative coordinator, said he is looking forward to cooking with the winter vegetables.
“I especially look forward to cooking with the spinach,’’ Mr. Kass wrote in an entry posted this afternoon on the White House blog.
“Winter spinach is extra sweet,’’ he said. “Sugar doesn’t freeze, so spinach produces extra sugars in the winter to protect itself from frost. It tastes almost like candy. We are going to make soups, salads and, of course, Chef Comerford’s famous cream-less creamed spinach.’’ (He was referring to White House executive chef Cristeta Comerford.)
Mr. Kass said that the garden staff will also plant a cover crop of rye to help re-balance the soil and prevent erosion of the top soil during the winter.
This is really good news especially since I just watched the Academy Nominated documentary film, FOOD, Inc. Learn more about the film at Movie Reviews here at this site.
The First Lady Michelle Obama will not have their two daughters, Malia and Sasha vaccinated.
Now they will grow their much of their own food.
What does that say to Americans? You can’t trust our vaccine and food suppliers.
I’m hoping that President Obama makes the right choices for our healthcare system as well.
The school lunch programs for our children need a lot of cleaning up.
Corporate America needs a shaking down.
I am OPTIMISTIC that we are headed in the right direction. I don’t know how much more the people in this country of ours can take.
I hope Our First Lady and our President continue to lead by example.
